경기필하모닉오케스트라는 1천3백만 경기도민의 삶의 질을 높이고 문화예술 대중화와 저변확대를 위해 1997년 10월 창단된 경기도립 오케스트라이다. 베토벤 사이클, 브람스 사이클, 슈만 사이클을 포함한 앤솔로지 시리즈, 마스터즈 시리즈, 마스터피스 시리즈 등을 진행하며 그 연주력을 인정받고 있다. 또한, 국립오페라단, 서울시오페라단 등과 정기적으로 협업하며 오페라 레퍼토리에서도 두각을 나타내고 있다.

2008년 중국과 미국 투어를 시작으로 2009년 스페인 발렌시아와 톨레도 페스티벌 초청 공연, 2010년 중국 투어, 이탈리아 투어로 호평받은 바 있다. 특히 2014년에는 일본 아시아 오케스트라 위크 페스티벌에 한국 오케스트라 대표로 초청받았으며, 2015년 한국 오케스트라 최초로 독일 베를린 필하모닉홀에서 연주하고 자를란트 뮤직 페스티벌에도 정식 초청을 받아 현지 언론으로부터 호평받았다. 2017년에는 아시아 오케스트라 최초로 베를린 뮤직 페스티벌에서 그리고 폴란드 국영방송 초청으로 카토비체에서 공연하는 등 아시아 주요 오케스트라로 급성장하고 있다.

2016년에는 오케스트라 선택에 까다롭기로 유명한 마에스트로 리카르도 무티가 경기필을 지휘하며 ‘지휘자의 요구에 민첩하게 반응하는 오케스트라’라고 극찬하였으며, 경기필과 함께 아시아에서는 처음으로 ‘무티 오페라 아카데미’를 진행하였다. 또한, 2017년 리카르도 무티가 경기필을 다시 선택하면서 세계의 주목을 받았고, 2016년 내한공연에서 경기필과 첫 호흡을 맞췄던 핀커스 주커만도 2018년에 다시 경기필과 공연하는 등 세계 유명 연주자들과 지속적으로 호흡을 맞추고 있다. 그 밖에 슐로모 민츠, 빌데 프랑, 케이트 로열, 엘사 드레이지, 마리아나 피졸라토 등 세계 최정상 연주자들과 협연해왔으며, 얍 판 츠베덴, 니콜라이 즈나이더, 리오 샴바달 등 세계적인 지휘자들이 객원 지휘한 바 있다.

2015년 한국 오케스트라 최초로 세계적인 음반 레이블인 ‘데카(DECCA)’에서 말러 교향곡 5번 음반을 발매하였다.

The Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra is the provincial orchestra of Gyeonggi Province, founded in October 1997 to enhance the quality of life of the province’s 13 million residents and to broaden public access to culture and the arts. The orchestra has earned recognition for its artistic excellence through projects such as the Anthology Series—including the Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann cycles—as well as the Masters Series and Masterpiece Series. It has also distinguished itself in opera repertoire through regular collaborations with organizations such as the National Opera of Korea and the Seoul Metropolitan Opera.

Beginning with tours in China and the United States in 2008, the orchestra has continued to build an international reputation through performances at the Valencia and Toledo Festivals in Spain in 2009, tours of China in 2010, and a successful tour of Italy. In 2014, it was invited as Korea’s representative orchestra to Japan’s Asia Orchestra Week Festival. In 2015, it became the first Korean orchestra to perform at the Berlin Philharmonie in Germany and was also officially invited to the Saarland Music Festival, receiving critical acclaim from local media. In 2017, it further expanded its global presence by performing at the Berlin Music Festival as the first Asian orchestra invited to the event, as well as in Katowice, Poland, at the invitation of Polish National Radio.

In 2016, the renowned maestro Ricardo Muti—known for being highly selective in his choice of orchestras—conducted the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra and praised it as “an orchestra that responds with remarkable agility to a conductor’s demands.” Together, they also launched the first Muti Opera Academy ever held in Asia. Muti chose to work with the orchestra again in 2017, drawing international attention, while violinist Pinchas Zukerman, who first collaborated with the orchestra during his 2016 Korea tour, returned for another performance in 2018. The orchestra has also appeared with world-class artists including Shlomo Mintz, Wilde Frang, Kate Royal, Elsa Dreisig, and Marianna Pizzolato, and has been guest-conducted by distinguished maestros such as Jaap van Zweden, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, and Lior Shambadal.

In 2015, the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra became the first Korean orchestra to release an album under the world-renowned classical label Decca, featuring Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.
