열정적인 자신만의 음색과 진정성 있는 연주로 관객과 소통하는 첼리스트 박건우는 16세에 첼로 전공을 시작하여 홈스쿨링을 통해 연세대학교 음악대학 관현악과에 입학하였고 전체 실기수석으로 졸업하였다. 이후 스승인 조영창 교수님의 권유로 도독하여 에센폴크방 국립음대(Essen Folkwang Universität der Künste) 석사과정을 최고점 졸업, 실내악 석사과정을 수료하였고 칼스루에 국립음대(Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe) 최고연주자과정을 최고점으로 졸업하며 전문연주자로서의 기반을 단단히 하였다.   

 서울 솔리스트 첼로앙상블 콩쿠르 전체대상, 동아 음악콩쿠르 2위, 음악춘추 콩쿠르 1위, 음악저널 콩쿠르 1위 등 국내 유수의 콩쿠르에서 우승 및 입상하며 두각을 나타낸 그는 이탈리아 첼로 국제 콩쿠르 심사위원 만장일치 우승, 불가리아 영 비르투오조 국제 음악 콩쿠르 2위, 독일 뷔트너 듀오 콩쿠르 우승, Kulturfonds Baden e.V für Streichquartette 콩쿠르 2위 등 국제무대에서도 음악적 실력을 입증하였다. 

이에 그치지 않고 로스트로포비치, 다니엘 샤프란, 나탈리아 구트만 등 당대 최고의 첼리스트들을 배출한 70년 역사의 체코 프라하의 봄 국제 음악 콩쿠르에서 한국인 최초로 첼로부문 파이널에 올라 1위없는 4위 및 심사위원 특별상을 수상하며 전 세계에 그의 이름을 알렸다.   태국 Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra의 협연자로 초청되어 세계적인 바이올리니스트이자 지휘자인 마에스트로 크리스토프 포펜과 성공적인 연주를 하였고 한국-벨기에 음악 페스티벌의 솔리스트로 선정되어 벨기에 작곡가인 F. Servais의 곡을 Korea-Belgium Festival Orchestra와 협연하여 Servais 협회로부터 극찬을 받았을 뿐 아니라 체코 Prague Radio Symphony, 독일 Philharmonic Südwestfalen, 이탈리아 Orchestra de Camera ‘Citta di Fondi’, 인천시립교향악단, 연세심포니오케스트라, 서울 솔리스트 첼로앙상블 등과 협연하며 솔리스트로서의 역량을 발휘하였다. 유럽 전역과 한국 및 아시아 주요 도시에서 독주회로 활동을 이어온 그는 귀국 후 국제아트홀 초청 독주회, 마리아칼라스홀 초청 독주회, 대구 오푸스라움 초청 독주회, 베토벤 탄생 250주년 기념 첼로 소나타 전곡 연주, 브람스 첼로 소나타 전곡 연주 등 다채로운 레퍼토리로 관객들을 만나며 그만의 음악적 깊이를 보여주었고, 실내악에도 각별한 관심을 쏟으며 예술의전당 야외음악회, 대구 실내악페스티벌, 광주 실내악시리즈, 계촌 클래식축제, 고양아람누리 마티네콘서트, 더하우스콘서트 줄라이페스티벌, 헤이리 국제음악제, 창원국제음악제 등 국내의 많은 실내악축제에 초청받고 있다.   

 또한 음악에 대한 끊임없는 탐구과 열정으로 Steven Isserlis, Julian Steckel, Philippe Mueller, Richard Aron, David Geringas, Michael Flaksman 등 세계적인 명장들의 마스터 클래스에 참가하여 실력을 인정받았으며 독일의 DAAD, Lions Club, Dr. Büttner 재단 등의 장학생으로 선정되어 후원받았고 독일 메뉴힌 재단의 연주자로서 연주활동을 하였다.   

 조영창, 최정은, 이유미, László Fenyö를 사사한 첼리스트 박건우는 대전시립교향악단, 강남심포니오케스트라 객원수석을 역임하고 현재 한국을 중심으로 POS Piano Trio, Ader Cello Quartet, 앙상블 프로젝트, 서울 솔리스트 첼로앙상블 등에서 연주활동을 활발히 하고 있으며 제33회 음악저널 신인음악상을 수상하였다.

Cellist Gunwoo Park is known for his passionate tone and sincere performances that deeply resonate with audiences. Remarkably, he began his cello studies at the age of 16 and was homeschooled before being accepted into the College of Music at Yonsei University, where he graduated top of his class in performance. He then moved to Germany at the recommendation of his mentor, Professor Young-Chang Cho, and completed his Master’s degree with top honors at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, followed by a chamber music Master’s program. He further earned his Konzertexamen (highest-level performance degree) with top distinction at the Karlsruhe University of Music, establishing a strong foundation as a professional musician. 

 Gunwoo gained recognition in Korea by winning top prizes in prestigious national competitions, including the Grand Prize at the Seoul Solist Cello Ensemble Competition, 2nd Prize at the Dong-A Music Competition, 1st Prize at the Music Chunchu Competition, and 1st Prize at the Music Journal Competition. Internationally, he achieved unanimous 1st Prize at the Italy Cello International Competition, 2nd Prize at the Young Virtuoso Competition in Bulgaria, 1st Prize at the Büttner Duo Competition in Germany, and 2nd Prize at the Kulturfonds Baden e.V Chamber Competition. Most notably, he became the first Korean finalist in the cello category of the Prague Spring International Music Competition—one of the most prestigious competitions with a 70-year legacy—where he received 4th Prize (no 1st prize awarded) and the Special Jury Prize. As a soloist, he has performed with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra under world-renowned violinist and conductor Christoph Poppen, and was selected as a soloist for the Korea-Belgium Music Festival, where he performed F. Servais' work with the Korea-Belgium Festival Orchestra, receiving high praise from the Servais Society. He has also performed with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonie Südwestfalen in Germany, Orchestra de Camera 'Città di Fondi' in Italy, Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Yonsei Symphony Orchestra, and the Seoul Solist Cello Ensemble, among others. Following his return to Korea, he has given numerous recitals, including at International Art Hall, Maria Callas Hall, and Opus Raum in Daegu. His repertoire has included complete sonata cycles such as Beethoven’s Cello Sonatas, Brahms’ Cello Sonatas, and more, showcasing his musical depth and artistic maturity. A dedicated chamber musician, he has been invited to many prominent festivals such as the Seoul Arts Center Outdoor Music Festival, Daegu Chamber Music Festival, Gwangju Chamber Series, Kyechun Classical Festival, Goyang Aramnuri Matinee, The House Concert July Festival, Heyri International Music Festival, and the Changwon International Music Festival. Continuously pursuing artistic growth.

Gunwoo Park has participated in masterclasses with world-renowned cellists including Steven Isserlis, Julian Steckel, Philippe Muller, Richard Aron, David Geringas, and Michael Flaksman. He has received scholarships and support from organizations such as DAAD, Lions Club, Dr. Büttner Foundation, and was also a featured artist of the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Foundation in Germany. 

 Gunwoo studied under Young-Chang Cho, Jungeun Choi, Yumi Lee, and László Fenyö, and has served as a guest principal cellist with the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra and Gangnam Symphony Orchestra. He is currently active in Korea as a member of the POS Piano Trio, Ader Cello Quartet, Ensemble Project, and the Seoul Solist Cello Ensemble. In recognition of his artistry, he received the 33rd Music Journal New Artist Award.
