Pianist Sue-Woon Hyung

깊이 있는 소리와 사색이 담긴 표현력으로 청중을 매료시키는 연주자라는 평을 받고 있는 피아니스트 형수운은 예원학교 실기수석 졸업 후 서울예술고등학교에 실기우수 입학 및 졸업(실기우수상)하였으며 서울대학교 음악대학 기악과를 전체 수석으로 졸업하며 서울대학교 총동창회장상을 수상하였다. 이후 독일 하노버 국립음대에서 전문연주자과정과 최고연주자과정을 수학하였다.


음연콩쿨에서 두 차례(’93,’02) 1위를 수상한 그는 이화경향콩쿨 2위, 음악저널콩쿨 대상, 세계일보콩쿨 1위, 수리음악콩쿨 1위, 삼익콩쿨 2위, 한국-독일 브람스협회콩쿨 1위, 틴에이저콩쿨 2위, 이천 세계 도자기 비엔날레 기념 피아노콩쿨 1위, TBC 대구방송콩쿨 2위 등 다수의 콩쿨에서 수상하였고, <젊은이의 음악제>에 3회(’94,’98,’03) 연주 및 금호 <영아티스트 시리즈> 독주회, 서울대학교 추계연주회, 명동성당 초청 신인음악회, 음악저널 초청 연주회, 피아노음악(현 음연) 장학금 수상기념 연주회 등 다양한 무대에 올랐다.


이탈리아 부조니 국제콩쿨과 스페인 마리아 카날스 국제콩쿨(Diplom 수상)에 파이널리스트로 올랐으며, 이탈리아 Barletta 국제콩쿨 1위 및 특별상(Virtuoso Prize), Padova 국제콩쿨 1위, Euterpe 국제콩쿨 1위, Venice Music Insieme 국제콩쿨 1위, Pietro Argento 국제콩쿨 3위 등 여러 국제 콩쿨에서 수상하였다. 김형배, 김미경, Matti Raekallio를 사사한 피아니스트 형수운은 베를린 국제 음악 페스티벌에서 연주한 베토벤 후기 소나타로 피아니스트 Peter Frankl의 극찬을 받았으며 이탈리아 부조니 국제 피아노 페스티벌에 초청되어 무대에 오른 것을 비롯하여 미국, 독일, 이탈리아, 스페인, 포르투갈 등지에서 다수의 협연과 독주회를 가지며 무대를 넓혀왔다.


귀국 후에는 예술의전당 아티스트로 선정되어 가진 <예술의전당 아티스트 시리즈> 초청 독주회를 통해 피아노 음악계를 이끌어갈 유망 피아니스트라는 호평을 받았으며, KBS 클래식FM 에 ‘주목할 만한 신인 피아니스트’로 소개되어 독주회 실황이 방송되었다. 서울대학교 음악대학에서 주최한 현대음악 프로젝트 에 피아니스트로 초청되어 현재 활동하는 국내 작곡가들의 곡을 초연하고 음반 발매 및 연주회를 가졌고, 2020년 베토벤 탄생 250주년 기념 32소나타 릴레이 콘서트에 초청되어 연주하였다. 예술의전당, 세종문화회관, 세라믹팔레스홀, 오픈스튜디오21, 일신홀 등에서 독주회 및 다양한 연주 무대를 펼치고 있고, French Chamber Orchestra, 코리아 챔버 오케스트라(구 바로크 합주단), 서울 챔버 앙상블, 디오오케스트라 등과 협연하며(예술의전당 IBK챔버홀, 성남아트센터 콘서트홀, 대구 콘서트하우스 콘서트홀 등) 활발한 연주활동을 이어오고 있다.

특히 교육에도 많은 열정을 쏟고 있는 그는 스타인웨이 마스터클래스, 가와이 페스티벌, 유로아트 아카데미 등 여러 마스터클래스와 캠프 교수진으로 참여하고 있으며, 틴에이저콩쿨에서 2019년부터 매년 지도상을 수상하며 2021년에는 골드지도상을 수상하였다. 서울대, 경희대, 세종대, 추계예술대, 서울교대 영재원 등에 출강 역임하였고, 현재는 예원학교, 서울예고,예술의전당 영재아카데미에 출강하고 있다. 



Praised for performances that combine profound musical reflection, rich tonal depth, and expressive artistry, pianist Soowoon Hyung has established himself as a compelling artist on the concert stage. After graduating as the top performance student from Yewon School, he entered Seoul Arts High School with distinction and graduated with honors in performance. He subsequently graduated first in his class from Seoul National University College of Music, receiving the Seoul National University Alumni Association President’s Award. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover in Germany, where he completed both the Professional Performance Program and the prestigious Konzertexamen (Postgraduate Soloist Program). 


A prizewinner of numerous national competitions, Hyung won First Prize twice at the Eumyeon Music Competition (1993, 2002). His other awards include Second Prize at the Ewha-Kyunghyang Competition, the Grand Prize at the Music Journal Competition, First Prize at the Segye Ilbo Competition, First Prize at the Suri Music Competition, Second Prize at the Samick Competition, First Prize at the Korea-Germany Brahms Association Competition, Second Prize at the Teenager Piano Competition, First Prize at the Icheon World Ceramic Biennale Commemorative Piano Competition, and Second Prize at the TBC Daegu Broadcasting Competition. He also appeared three times at the Young Musicians Festival (1994, 1998, 2003) and was featured in numerous distinguished recital series, including the Kumho Young Artist Series, the Seoul National University Autumn Concert, the Myeongdong Cathedral Young Artists Concert, the Music Journal Invitational Concert, and the Piano Music Scholarship Winners’ Recital. 


On the international stage, Hyung was a finalist at both the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Italy and the Maria Canals International Music Competition in Spain, where he received a Diploma Award. He has won First Prize and the Virtuoso Prize at the Barletta International Piano Competition, First Prize at the Padova International Competition, First Prize at the Euterpe International Competition, First Prize at the Venice Music Insieme International Competition, and Third Prize at the Pietro Argento International Music Competition. Having studied under Hyungbae Kim, Mikyung Kim, and Matti Raekallio, he received high praise from renowned pianist Peter Frankl for his performance of Beethoven’s late sonatas at the Berlin International Music Festival. Invited to perform at the Busoni International Piano Festival, he has since expanded his international career through solo recitals and concerto appearances throughout the United States, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. 


Following his return to Korea, Hyung was selected as an artist of the Seoul Arts Center Artist Series and presented an invited solo recital that drew critical acclaim, establishing him as one of the country’s most promising pianists. He was also introduced by KBS Classic FM as a “Noteworthy Young Pianist,” with a live recital performance broadcast nationwide. Invited as a pianist for the Contemporary Music Project organized by Seoul National University College of Music, he premiered works by leading Korean composers and participated in related recordings and concerts. In 2020, he was invited to perform in the Beethoven 250th Anniversary Complete Piano Sonata Relay Concert.


Hyung has presented solo recitals and chamber performances at major venues including the Seoul Arts Center, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Ceramic Palace Hall, Open Studio 21, and Ilshin Hall. As a concerto soloist, he has collaborated with ensembles such as the French Chamber Orchestra, the Korea Chamber Orchestra (formerly the Baroque Chamber Orchestra), the Seoul Chamber Ensemble, and the Dio Orchestra, appearing at venues including the IBK Chamber Hall of the Seoul Arts Center, Seongnam Arts Center Concert Hall, and Daegu Concert House. 


Deeply committed to music education, Hyung regularly serves on the faculty of masterclasses and educational programs including the Steinway Masterclass, Kawai Festival, and Euro Art Academy. Since 2019, he has received annual Teaching Excellence Awards from the Teenager Piano Competition, culminating in the Gold Teacher Award in 2021. He has previously taught at Seoul National University, Kyung Hee University, Sejong University, Chugye University for the Arts, and the Gifted Education Center of Seoul National University of Education. He currently serves on the faculties of Yewon School, Seoul Arts High School, and the Seoul Arts Center Gifted Academy.
