이성주는 50년이 넘는 시간을 무대에서 보내고 있는 현역 연주자로, 패기와 실력이 넘치는 실내악 앙상블 ‘조이오브스트링스’의 예술 감독으로, 동시에 명문 음악학교인 한국예술종합학교의 명예 교수이자 영재원 원장으로 1인 3역을 해내고 있는 음악가이다. 1964년 ‘서울시향 소년소녀 협주회’를 통해 아홉 살의 나이에 데뷔를 한 이성주는 이어 ‘이화 경향 콩쿠르’의 특상을 받는다. 이화여중 재학 중 미국으로 건너가 크라이슬러 장학금을 받으며 줄리어드 예비학교부터 대학원까지 거치는 엘리트 코스를 밟았다. 이반 갈라미언 그리고 도로시 딜레이, 줄리어드를 대표하는 두 사람에 의해 키워진 이성주는 1976년 ‘영 콘서트 아티스트 오디션’에 선발되는 영광을 누린다. 오디션 선발로 주어진 1977년 뉴욕 카프만 콘서트 홀(현 카프만 뮤직 센터) 데뷔 리사이틀은 <뉴욕 타임스>가 “최고의 바이올리니스트”라는 리뷰를 싣게 했다. 1979~1980년 음악전문지 <뮤지컬 아메리카>가 선정한 미국 최우수 영 아티스트로 선정되는 등 눈부신 활약을 하는 와중 뉴욕 코지어스코 재단이 주최하는 비에니야프스키 콩쿠르 우승(1974년)을 비롯하여, 시벨리우스 콩쿠르/워싱턴 콩쿠르(1975년), 차이콥스키 콩쿠르(1978년), 퀸 엘리자베스 콩쿠르(1980년), 나움버그 콩쿠르(1981년) 등 세계 주요 콩쿠르에서 입상하거나 파이널리스트로 선정되어 실력을 인정받았다. 1993년 개원한 한국예술종합학교의 교수라는 중책을 맡고 1994년 귀국한 젊은 교수 이성주는 현재까지도 후학을 양성하며 연주자와 교육자의 길을 걷고 있다. 한국의 대표적인 앙상블로 자리 잡은 ‘조이오브스트링스’를 1997년 창단해 현재까지 예술감독을 맡고 있다. 그의 폭넓은 음악적 경험과 탁월한 지도력에 힘입어 20년이 넘는 시간 동안 꾸준히 성장한 ‘조이오브스트링스’는 정기 연주회 이외에도 다양한 기획 연주로 연평균 10회에 달하는 무대를 만들어 오고 있다. 이성주는 예술감독으로서 ‘조이오브스트링스’화 함께하는 신선한 기획의 연주 외에도 거의 매년 자신만의 리사이틀로 꾸준히 음악적 탐구를 이어왔다. 이 외의 음악적 활동은 일일이 열거할 수 없을 정도로 많은데 서울시향, KBS 교향악단, 코리안 심포니, 서울바로크합주단(현재 코리안챔버오케스트라), 대전시향, 광주시향, 창원시향, 충남시향, 포항시향 등 국내 최고의 오케스트라와 협연도 물론 포함한다. 2004년부터 3년간 대관령국제음악제와 호암아트홀 기획연주를 통해 실내악을 통한 음악 활동도 꾸준히 이어갔다. 이성주는 예술가로서의 다방면의 활약을 인정받아 2012년 한국예술경영인협회에서 주관한 ‘올해의 공연예술가상’을 수상했고 시벨리우스 국제 콩쿠르, 모스크바 국제 현악 콩쿠르, 시옹 국제바이올린 콩쿠르, 서울 국제 음악 콩쿠르의 심사위원으로도 활동하였다. 디스코그래피는 디스코그래피는 <슈만 바이올린 소나타>를 시작으로 소품집 , <바흐 무반주 소나타와 파르티타>, 소품집 <이성주의 작은 사랑 노래>, <비발디 사계>까지 이어진다. 2009년 최초의 협주곡 앨범인 <베토벤 바이올린 협주곡>을 내놓았고, 글라주노프, 브루흐, 멘델스존 협주곡을 담은 , <브람스 바이올린 소나타>, <바흐 바이올린 협주곡>까지 꾸준한 활동이 계속되고 있다.   

Sung-Ju Lee is an active performer who has spent more than five decades on stage. She is a musician who continues to fulfill three roles at once: as a distinguished violinist, as Artistic Director of Joy of Strings, a chamber ensemble known for its youthful energy and outstanding musicianship, and as Professor Emerita and Director of the Gifted Education Center at the Korea National University of Arts, one of Korea’s most prestigious music institutions. Sung-Ju Lee made her debut in 1964 at the age of nine through the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra’s Children’s Concerto Concert, and later received the Special Prize at the Ewha-Kyunghyang Concours. While attending Ewha Girls’ Middle School, she moved to the United States, where she received the Chrysler Scholarship and followed an elite musical path from Juilliard’s Pre-College Division through graduate school. Trained by two of Juilliard’s most renowned pedagogues, Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay, Lee was selected for the Young Concert Artists Auditions in 1976. Her debut recital at New York’s Kaufman Concert Hall, now Kaufman Music Center, in 1977, which was awarded through the audition, led The New York Times to describe her as “a top violinist.” During a period of remarkable achievement, she was named one of America’s finest young artists by Musical America for the 1979–1980 season. She also gained international recognition through major competitions, winning the Wieniawski Competition hosted by the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York in 1974, and earning prizes or finalist distinctions at the Sibelius Competition and Washington Competition in 1975, the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1978, the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1980, and the Naumburg Competition in 1981. After being appointed to the important post of professor at the Korea National University of Arts, which opened in 1993, Lee returned to Korea in 1994 as a young professor. Since then, she has continued to pursue her path both as a performer and educator, nurturing the next generation of musicians. In 1997, she founded Joy of Strings, now recognized as one of Korea’s leading ensembles, and has served as its Artistic Director ever since. Under her broad musical experience and exceptional leadership, Joy of Strings has grown steadily for more than twenty years, presenting not only regular concerts but also a wide range of special projects, with an average of nearly ten performances each year. 

 As Artistic Director, Lee has continued to present fresh and innovative performances with Joy of Strings, while also pursuing her own musical exploration through solo recitals almost every year. Her musical activities are too extensive to list in full, but they include concerto performances with many of Korea’s foremost orchestras, including the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra, Korean Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Baroque Ensemble, now the Korean Chamber Orchestra, Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, Gwangju Symphony Orchestra, Changwon Philharmonic Orchestra, Chungnam Philharmonic Orchestra, and Pohang Philharmonic Orchestra. Beginning in 2004, she also continued her chamber music activities for three years through the Great Mountains International Music Festival and special concert projects at Hoam Art Hall. 

 In recognition of her wide-ranging achievements as an artist, Sung-Ju Lee received the Artist of the Year Award from the Korea Performing Arts Management Association in 2012. She has also served as a jury member for the Sibelius International Violin Competition, the Moscow International David Oistrakh String Competition, the Sion International Violin Competition, and the Seoul International Music Competition. Her discography begins with Schumann Violin Sonatas and continues with the encore album Joy, Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, the encore album Sung-Ju Lee’s Little Love Song, and Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. In 2009, she released her first concerto album, Beethoven Violin Concerto, followed by Violin Concertos featuring works by Glazunov, Bruch, and Mendelssohn, as well as Brahms Violin Sonatas and Bach Violin Concertos, reflecting her continuing dedication to performance and recording.
